Episode 76: What To Do When You’ve Hit A Career Dead-End, with Andrea Macek

Episode 76: What To Do When You’ve Hit A Career Dead-End, with Andrea Macek

Most people hit a Career Dead End at some point during their lives: graduating into a recession, an unexpected layoff, or starting a new job and realizing it’s not a fit. So, what do you do when this happens?

Odds are that at some point during your 40-50-year long career, you’ll hit a Career Dead-End at some point.

Have you hit a Career Dead-End in your life yet?
I’ve hit two so far.
Career Dead End #1: When I was a college junior, the Great Recession hit. Suddenly all of the attractive job offers at my college went away completely. Companies weren’t recruiting or hiring. Seniors’ job offers got rescinded. It freaked me out so much that I decided to apply to graduate school prematurely and get my MPA directly after college. That led me to get a graduate degree that I didn’t think through very carefully, which leads me to my Career Dead End #2…..
Career Dead End #2: Since I rushed into the whole grad school thing, I didn’t carefully vet whether or not I actually wanted to work in the public policy world. Talk about putting the cart before the horse. By the time I tried out an education policy internship at age 25, I realized I hated it….leading me to my “what the heck do I do now?” phase.
For you, your career dead-end might look different.
  • It might be an unexpected lay-off or pink slip.
  • It might be a toxic boss or leader who stinks up the culture at your workplace, making you miserable.
  • It might be realizing that the job you’ve been doing for the last 10 years, just isn’t cutting it anymore.
If the average career spans between 40-50 years, you’re bound to face a “Career Dead End” at some point.
On today’s episode, you’ll hear from Career Coach Andrea Macek, who talks about what she did when she got laid off from her job….30 days after getting married. Sheesh.
We talk about what to do when you hit the Career Dead-End, how to own your super-powers, and how Andrea has used courage and bravery to launch her own business through life’s curve-balls.

Episode 74: How I Got A FAANG/MAANG Job Offer, with Rosita Reyes

Episode 74: How I Got A FAANG/MAANG Job Offer, with Rosita Reyes

FAANG or MAANG jobs refer to getting a job offer from Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix or Google. They are some of the most prestigious job offers out there!

Rome wasn’t built a day, and you won’t get a FAANG/MAANG job offer in a day or weeks, either.

On this episode, you’re going to hear from Rosita Reyes, and how she landed a huge FAANG/MAANG job offer by having a recruiter reach out to her on LinkedIn.
She couldn’t believe it was a real person. She thought it was a phishing exercise.
But no, it was real. A Meta recruiter had seen her profile, her certifications, work experiences, and decided she’d be the perfect fit for her open role.
This opportunity didn’t just land in Rosita’s lap.
Rosita’s hard work in crafting her career story and up-skilling herself to be ready for a big opportunity paid off.
She worked for it, through small actions, day in and day out, year in and year out.
She stayed ready.
By now, you probably know that I talk a lot about the Compound Effect.
The idea that small steps lead us to the biggest results in our lives.
We don’t climb huge mountains overnight or build massive walls in one day.
Amazing results are made up of tiny decisions and steps. And the path is never linear. There are losses and wins along the way.
Whenever I get frustrated with the slow pace of change, my husband lovingly reminds me of my own advice, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
And, I truly do believe that. Any program that guarantees you any incredible result, seemingly over-night or even “within 6 weeks” is not trustworthy.

Have you heard of “FAANG/MAANG” jobs? They stand for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix & Google. When Facebook re-branded as “Meta” we got MAANG. Basically, these are the top big tech companies that people want to work for the most – often due to their competitive salaries, benefits, and perks.  On today’s episode, you’ll hear how Rosita Reyes got a recruiter note via her LinkedIn inbox, inviting her to consider a new role at Meta.

Episode 62: Caroline’s Client Success Story

Episode 62: Caroline’s Client Success Story

Does the thought of networking make you want to barf? Do you want to pivot into tech and get a pay increase? Has it been a long time since you’ve interviewed for jobs? Check out Caroline’s story.

Caroline was ready to pivot into tech but didn’t know how to get started.

In January 2022, Caroline came to me with a desire to move into tech, get paid more money, and find a role that was better suited to her strengths and interests.
She signed up for my 6 month career coaching program, and we went on a journey to a) figure out her next career move and b) make it happen.
Together we did the following:
  • We got clear on what she was looking for her in her next career move (her top 3 career non-negotiables, one-year vision, values, and so much more)
  • We re-branded her professional experiences into a shiny resume, cover letter, elevator pitch, and LinkedIn profile
  • We explored a variety of different companies and roles through informational chats, intentional networking, and LinkedIn
  • We did many mock interviews to make sure Caroline was READY for when the right opportunity came along.
I might have crafted the roadmap for Caroline, but Caroline DID THE WORK. She overcame her disdain for networking, finding a way to make it FUN for her in NYC and going to in-person events. She created a job search process that worked for HER life and centered her well-being. And, she held belief for herself that, no matter how long this process took, it would be worth it in the end.
Fast forward to August 2022: Caroline accepts an offer from a leading tech company with a 30% increase in pay. Not only that, but she successfully negotiated and broke into her desired new industry.
On this episode, Caroline discusses the ups and downs of a career change journey, how she managed the redirections and long waits, and how she made the job search process manageable for her. You can make this happen, too!
